Fluroxypyr-butoxypropyl: the first experiences with products based on this new formulation technology

Currently, fluroxypyr, the biologically active ingredient of the post-emergence cereal herbicide Starane is used as the 1-methylheptyl ester. This ester dictates the form in which this herbicide can be formulated, namely as emulsifiable concentrates (EC's) or as emulsions in water (EW's) in which the oil phase has to contain an aromatic solvent to dissolve the ester. By changing from the current, low melting point solid ester to the liquid butoxypropyl ester of fluroxypyr (fluroxypyr - butoxypropyl), it has proven possible to change the physical parameters in such a manner, that fluroxypyr can now be formulated as high concentration EW's, or EC's without aromatic solvents. This change does however not affect the biologically active moiety of the molecule, fluroxypyr, and therefore its biological characteristics are unaltered. Our experiences with the novel 400 g a.e./litre EW of fluroxypyr-butoxypropyl show on a g a.e./g a.e. basis the same levels of efficacy, and selectivity as the meptyl ester EC's. Also, the novel ester formulations allow the same wide raise of tank-mix possibilities as for the current EC products.
