Metosulam + atrazine: a novel herbicide combination for control of broad-leaved weeds in maize

Since 1992, metosulam has been tested extensively in maize in Belgium and France. Results show the interesting weed spectrum of this molecule when applied at 25-30 g a.i. per ha against a wide range of broad-leaved weeds, including to atrazine resistant species such as: Chenopodium album, Solanum nigrum, Amaranthus retroflexus as well as against Polygonum persicaria. The reported results were obtained in pre-emergence applications (Belgian and French trials) as well as in post-emergence applications at two leaf stage of the maize in Belgian trials. Tank mix combinations of metosulam with atrazine show generally higher efficacy on all weeds mentioned, both in pre-emergence and post-emergence applications at the two leaf stage. The control of the following weeds was significantly enhanced: Polygonum convolvulus, Polygonum aviculare. These promising results lead to the development of a ready-to-use in-can mixture, EF-1348, an SC formulation containing 20 g per litre metosulam + 480 g per litre atrazine. The following application rates are proposed: in France 1.25 litre per ha for pre-emergence use only; whilst in Belgium, the recommended application rate will be 1.0 litre per ha, both in pre- and post-emergence applications. EF-1348 has displayed excellent selectivity across a wide range of maize cultivars, irrespective of the method of application. As shown in several studies conducted in both countries, EF-1348 can be used, without any rotational crop restrictions
