In a field experiment, Vydate a commercially available nematicide, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7NSK2 decreased the total numbers of soil nematodes by 45 per cent and 43 epr cent respectively. On the other hand, while 7NSK2 had no effect on the other examined soil invertebrates, Vydate reduced mite and collembole populations by 61 and 94 per cent respectively. More interestingly, in a pot experiment, soil inoculation with P. aeruginosa 7NSK2 selectively decreased plant-parasitic nematode populations by 68 per cent while saprophytic nematodes were not affected. Inversely, the effect of Vydate in the pot experiment appeared to be stronger on the saprophytic nematodes (65 per cent) than on the plant-parasites (31 per cent). In both the field and the pot experiment, Vydate application combined with 7NSK2 inoculation gave no significant differences in nematode suppression as compared to the Vydate treatment alone. Inoculation of a detergent-adapted 7NSK2 strain in combination with the detergent Igepal CO-720 improved root colonization by the bacterium in a pot experiment. Through this effect, plant dry matter yield was significantly increased relative to when the bacterium was inoculated alone.
