Optimizing the silage making period on the basis of the protein and crude fibre content of gramineous crops

The optimum period for making silage was clarified on the basis of the protein and crude fibre content of perennial garmineous plants. The criteria were as follows: the minimum protein content - 15 per cent and the maximum content of crude fibre - 26 per cent in Dm of grass samples. Grass samples were collected from the 27 of May to the 20 of June twice a week from 12 fields previously chosen. The content of dry matter and protein of the samples as well as recommendations about the optimum silage making time were immediately forwarded to two agricultural newspapers of Estonia. By the analyses of 282 grass samples it was concluded that in 1996 the optimum time to make silage from gramineous plants was the 1 week of June, that for garmineous-rich field hay it was the first decade of June and for leguminous-rich hay it was up to the 20 of June. No significant temporal differences were established between the protein and crude fibre content of perennial gramineous plants in North-, Central and South-Estonia
