Studies on the distribution of tetraploid cells in root meristems of diploid hemp (Cannabis sativa L.)

Statistically significant proof has been obtained confirming the suggestion of Mudra (1939) that different hemp types (2n=20) could be characterised by the ratio of tetraploid cells (2n=40) in the root tip. The examination were made on varieties maintained in Kompolt (Hungary) (Chinese monoecious, Chinese dioecious, Fibrimon, Kompolti and Kompolti yellow-stemmed), on types growing spontaneously in Hungary and on F1 progeny (spontaneous type x cultivated varieties). It was found that the cultivated varieties could be divided into two groups on the origin and of the ratio of tetraploid cells in the root tip. The spontaneous types had a very high ratio of tetraploid cells (21 percent).
