Blood parameter and plasma progesterone of beef cows receiving embryo transfer and the fertility

Objective of the present study was to examine the relationship between blood composition (18 parameters and plasma progesterone) at the day of embryo transfer and the subsequent fertility in beef cows. A total of 32 cows was transferred either two embryos (n=25) or one embryo after artificial insemination (n=7). Recipients were divided into 3 categories according to the pregnant status: those which did not conceive (Group 0, n=13) and those which became pregnant and produced single (Group 1, n=11) or twin calves (Group 2, n=8). Analysis of variance showed no difference in the mean of each parameter between the groups. Stepwise discriminant analysis of two opposing groups according to the pregnant status (Group 0 vs. Groups 1+2) revealed that number of correct cases was 84.6% (11/13) for Group 0 and 78.9% (15/19) for Groups 1+2. Significant variables for analysis were progesterone (P0.01), globulin (P0.01) and amylase (P0.05). Discriminant analysis of three groups gave 72.7% (8/11) correct classification for Group 1 and 75.0% (6/8) for Group 2. Calcium (P0.01), GOT (P0.05) and total protein (P0.05) were significantly selected as variables. It is suggested that the fertility and the production of multiples in the recipient cows can be predicted by certain blood composition and progesterone obtained at the day of embryo transfer
