Effect of reducing crude protein and energy content in diets with amino acid supplementation on nitrogen balance, performance and carcass characteristics in pigs

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the reduced crude protein (CP) and amino acid (AA) supplemented diets on performance, carcass characteristics and the reduction of nitrogen (N) exertion. In experiment 1: 108 pigs (32.9 kg BW) were fed one of the three corn-soybean meal diets containing either 16 or 14% CP supplemented with lysine (Lys) or 12% CP supplemented with Lys, methionine (Met), tryptophan (Trp) and threonine (Thr). This experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of the reduced CP, AA supplemented diet on the performance of grower pigs. Pigs on each diet performed similarly. No difference in the feed intake or the feed conversion ratios was detected between the treatments. In experiment 2: 54 pigs (65.8 kg BW) were fed one of the three corn-soybean meal diets containing either 14% CO supplemented with Lys (TDN 77%), 11.5% CP supplemented with Lys, Met, and Thr (TDN 77%), 11.5% CP supplemented with Lys, Met, and Thr (TDN 74%). This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding the latter two reduced CP, AA supplemented diet on the performance and carcass characteristics of finisher pigs. Pigs receiving the 11.5% CP (TDN 77%) diet grew faster (P.05) than pigs fed either the 14% CP (TDN 77%) diet or 11.5% CP (TDN 74%) diet. There were no differences (P.10) in the feed intake and feed conversion ratios in the latter 2 treatments and no difference (P.10) in the thickness of fat on the shoulder, back and loin in all treatments. In experiment 3: 8 castrated pigs (37.5 kg BW) were fed the 16% CP (TDN 78%) diet or the 12% CP (TDN 75%) diet supplemented Lys, Meet, Trp, and Thr. These diets were the same as those in experiment 1
