Analysis of the construction process of cocoon shape by Bombyx mori

The cocoon shape construction process was considered by both visually examining and measuring the changes in size and shape of spinning regions at several different stages of spinning. Serial changes in fixed direction of the latter half of a silkworm's body were then analyzed. The relationship between the body stretching behaviour of a silkworm and the occurrence of constricted parts in the middle of a cocoon was also examined by counting the number of incidents of stretching and measuring the expanded spinning region size caused by the stretching behaviour. As a result of these analyses, the authors were able to show for the first time numerically the changes in size of spinning regions in the cocoon construction process and visually observe them by using 3DASBS. Silkworms were seen to slowly converge the size of spinning regions to the final cocoon size, after quickly reducing it during the construction of the base and frame. As stretching behaviour was more often observed in species producing cocoons with remarkably constricted parts, it was thought that this behaviour was one factor in the appearance of constricted parts in the center of a cocoon
