Effects of niobium and tantalum on nutrient and water uptake of mulberry roots

Niobium and tantalum have been used in electronic industries and others in recent years. Their effects on nutrient and water uptake through mulberry roots were studied. In this paper niobium supressed a little cytochrome oxidase activity of young corn roots at the concentration of 10(-4)M and inhibited the activity at 10(-2)M completely. Tantalum supressed a little cytochrome oxidase activity at 10(-5)M and inhibited completely at 5 x 10(-3)M. Inhibition of the nutrient and water uptake by niobium and tantalum was observed over the concentration of 10(-3)M. At the concentration of 10(-3)M, both of niobium and tantalum inhibited nutrient and water uptake in the order; K about NH4-N about PH2O and PNH4-NK about H2O, respectively. From these results, it was considered that the toxicity of tantalum was stronger than that of niobium
