Effects of wind on oceanographic conditions of Gokasho bay [Japan]

We investigated the effects of coastal upwellings on environmental factors of Gokasho Bay which located in the northern part of Kumano-nada coast. In this area coastal upwellings were induced by westerly wind in the summer and autumn. Cold and high-saline water masses outside the bay intruded into9 the lower layer of the bay when coastal upwellings occurred. And when direction of wind changed to easterly after the intrusion, warm water masses intruded into the upper layer of the bay. When intrusion was occurred by westerly wind, oxygen was supplied into the lower layer of the bay. Westerly wind index (difference of atmospheric pressure between Shionomisaki and Omaezaki) correlated negatively with water temperature and correlated positively with salinity and dissolved oxygen in the lower layer of the bay. We also investigated the effects of wind on water exchange of the bay. Transfer coefficient, calculated by box model analysis, correlated positively with east-westerly wind index (square of the difference of atmospheric pressure) and frequency of the change of wind direction
