Two principally different approaches used in hydrology for the calculation of the probable maximum flood (PMF) of a river are explained. One of them is based on the method of mathematical statistics, the other - on the deterministic methods where first flood causing factors are maximized, then all the characteristic flood elements are calculated by a hydrological model. In the given research the PMF of the Daugava (basin area = 84 000 square km) has been calculated by the deterministic method. The main flood generating factor in the Daugava basin is intensive snow melting. The maximization of flood generating factors has been performed. To simulate the PMF of the Daugava the hydrological model METQ96 has been used. The verification of the model shows that it can be successfully used for PMF calculation.
