The report deals with the development of herbicides in Russia. The present assortment of herbicides applied in that country has been compiled and improved since 1961. At present there are herbicides for all the major agricultural crops. Each new herbicide is usually tested for 2-3 years. Since 1961 the number of different herbicides as well as their effect in weed control have increased, their application methods have been improved. It is emphasized that herbicides must be effective in weed control, but harmless to cultivated crops; they must be ecologically safe and economically profitable
