The objective of the review was to identity the genes and genomic regions that have beena ssociated with growth and carcass traits in pigs, their use and their possible inclusion in animal improvement. With the development of genetic markers, it has been possible to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with growth and carcass traits. Two strategies have been used to accomplish this goal: the candidate gene approach and the genome-wide search. By their use genomic regions on chromosomes 3,4,5,6,7,12 and 13 have been potentially associated with growth and fat. Genomic regions associated with quantitative traits will need to be identified in each population. QTL segregating in one population may be fixed in another, however, as long as genetic variance for the trait still exists, they will be segregating and therefore, it is possible to identify them. If marker-assisted selection is to take place in a poplation, it is critical to recognize the QTL that affect the traits

El objetivo fue identificar los genes y las regiones genomicas que han sido asociadas con el crecimiento y las caracteristicas a la canal en cerdos, y su posible utilizacion en programas de mejoramiento. Con el desarrollo de los marcadores geneticos se han identificado loci de caracteristicas cuantitativas (LCC) asociados con crecimiento y caracteristicas a la canal. Las dos estrategias usadas para identificar LCC son eluso de los genes candidatos y las busquedas genomicas. Asi se han identificado regiones genomicas en los cromosomas 3,4,5,6,7,12 y 13 potencialmente asociadas con el crecimiento y la grasa dorsal. Las regiones genomicas asociadas con caracteristicas cuantitativas deben ser identificadas en cada poblacion, ya que los LCC segregados en una poblacion pueden estar fijos en otra; sin embargo, mientras siga existiendo la variacion genetica para la caracteristica, los LCC seguiran segregando y su identificacion sera posible.
