New rice technology, productivity and efficiency input use

A large number of modern varieties (MVs) of rice were released by research institution and use by Filipino farmers since the `Green Revolution' was initiated with the introduction of IR-8 in 1966. The varieties could be classified into a number of groups. The first-generation was meant to save land as the most scarce factor of production, the second-generation to ensure the stability of yield incorporating insect and disease resistance, and the third-generation to add value, to rice production by improving grain and reducing labor and water inputs through direct seeding method of crop establishment. IR-8, IR-36 and IR-64 represents these generations of cultivars respectively. This study is to assess the impact of these successive generations of MVs in the use of land, labor, capital and the distribution of farm income among owners of these factors of production. The paper utilizes the survey data collected periodically in Central Luzon and Laguna Province, the so called rice bowl of the Philippines, for almost three decades since 1966 encompassing periods before and after the introduction of MVs
