Biology of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F. Anobiidae on different host materials

The biology of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F. was studied using six different host materials: bean, wheat and cotton seeds, tobacco leaves and bulbs of onion and garlic. The duration of life cycle of the insect were highly and significantly different among the treatments. Incubation period of the eggs among host materials ranged from 7-11 days, larval period from 58-70 days. Sizes showed no significant differences among the different host materials, pupal period ranged from 8-10 days and the total life cycle ranged from 95-109 days. Adult longevity also varied, male ranged from 14-20 days while the female 17-21 days. Females predominated males in all treatments except in onion and tobacco. All host materials showed potential as rearing media for L. serricorne. Most number of eggs and highest percent hatchability were noted in tobacco, for pupa and larva, wheat and tobacco showed the longest larval and pupal period. For adult, longer life span was observed in wheat followed by tobacco. Based on the results of the study, selection of the best host materials will depend on the need or use of the insect
