Efficacy and safety of Alternaria sp. as a biological control against for Sphenoclea zeylanica

An alternaria species was isolated from diseased Sphenoclea zeylanica collected in rice fields at Los Banos, Laguna [Philippines] 1991. This pathogen causes a leaf blight on S. zeylanica. Initial laboratory and field studies conducted at IRRI demonstrated that this Alternaria sp. is a promising bioherbicide candidate. To determine the safety and efficacy of Alternaria sp. as a biological control agent for S. zeylanica, host range studies and field trials in farmers' fields were conducted. Host range studies showed that out of 40 plant species tested belonging to 20 families, only S. zeylanica was found susceptible. In Nueva Ecija (Philippines), plant height and dry weight of S. zeylanica significantly reduced the application of Alternaria at 6.4 x 10 raised to the eight power conidia/sq.m. In Leyte [Philippines], significant reduction in plant height were observed on plots treated with Alternaria at both concentrations used. Dry weight were reduced by all treatments except in plots treated with 2,4-D at 0.4 kg ai/ha. Alternaria sp. is host specific and effective as a biological agent for S. zeylanica control
