The number and distribution of native pigs and other improved breeds in the Philippines are not exactly known. However, based on the number of research papers gathered, it may be surmised that there is a strong feeling (and it's getting stronger) to conserve and use native pigs in the Philippines, particularly in the traditional farm setting. There exist already a wealth of information based on the accumulated results from various researches conducted to asssess their performance and use. Most of the research reports may have been based in Los Banos but has involved native pigs originating from almost all over the country. For example, production and reproductive performance of native pigs are, in general, inferior than the commercial stocks. But because of the minimal capital and operating costs needed to raise them, smallholder farmers tend to favor them versus commercial stocks. Hence, native pigs are commonly perceived to have important socio-economic roles in the traditional and subsistence farming system
