Study for morphological characters of species alien to wheat in Bangladesh

Morphological characters of fifty-three species alien to wheat collected from USA, Australia, Brazil and Bangladesh were evaluated under the agro-environmental situation of Bangladesh. Some species required vernalization and extra light for flowering and seed setting. Species alien to wheat grew successfully, flowered and produced seeds. The 10 morphological characters studied differed significantly. T. Turgidum was early (57 days) in flower initiation and least in days to complete flowering (67 days). H. villosa of Sicily origin was late (129 days) in flower initiation and took maximum days (149) to complete flowering. The shortest species was T. variabilis (41.20 cm) and S. cereale cv. prolific was the tallest (112. 10 cm). The wild species produced more tillers than the cultivated species; and spikelets/head, fertility percentage and seed germination percentage was higher in the cultivated species. T. tauschii produced the highest number of effective tillers/plant (40.77) and a Brazilian hexaploid wheat RH 18 produced the least number of ineffective tillers/plant (0.90) while a tetraploid species T. macrochaetum produced maximum number of ineffective tillers/plant (40.7). T. aestivum cv. Akbar gave the least number of tillers/plant (4.87) and maximum number of tillers/plant (76.27) was obtained from T. columnare. The wild species were mostly bushy, few of them showed creeping tendency and few wild species including hexaploid wheat, T. spelta produced fragile rachis. The seeds of the wild species were relatively shrunken and were covered by very hard lemma and palea. Planting dates of the species alien to wheat has been shown in a sketch and this can serve as useful tool to the wheat breeders for alien gene transfer to wheat.
