Evaluation of muriate of potash as a source of potassium for maize crop

Sulphate of potash (SOP) is being used as a preferred potassium fertilizer. Muriate of potash (MOP) is relatively much cheaper fertilizer. A comparative study was undertaken to evaluate MOP as K fertilizer for maize. MOP and SOP were applied @ 0, 75, 150 and 225 kg K2O ha-1 in combination with recommended doses of nitrogen and phosphorus. Statistically similar response of maize crop was observed to both the fertilizers in terms of plant height, 1000 grain weight, grain and stover yields. Influence of fertilizers was also similar on N, P and K concentrations in grain and stover. No prominent effect of Cl was observed except increase in Cl concentration in grain with the application of MOP @ 225 kg K2O ha-1. Presence of Cl in MOP however, did not lower the yields. Application of MOP @ 75 kg K2O ha-1 is the safe rate to cut down suspected Cl effects and to maintain the available K level of the soil.
