Heritability estimates of some traits in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

The heritability of a trait has a key role in any plant breeding programme. A study on twenty eight crosses among eight wheat varieties was conducted during 1985-86 in order to ascertain broad sense heritability. The heritability percentages for productive tillers per plant, spike length, spikelets per main spike, number of grains per main spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant were respectively 2.33 to 56.33, 2.78 to 56.53, 2.04 to 64.85, 6.07 to 80.85, 6.12 to 94.2 and 19.18 to 98.34. The current studies reveal that different cross combinations may work as suitable material for different characters and a single cross can not be marked to have desirability for all the characters, simultaneously.
