The paper presents an overview of forest management and timber policies in the United States since colonial times, with particular emphasis on the National Forests. It shows how forest ownership, management philosophy, laws and policies have evolved over time, and how they are continuing to evolve even today. Forest management practices and timber productivity among forest owners are compared.
