Workshop [plant research] | Reunion de trabajo
1984
The International Trials Workshop was the first organized event in which bean scientists from the Latin American, African and West Asian networks met. Despite language barriers a highly useful interchange of experiences took place. The meeting demonstrated that collaborative research programs have successfully been established and that superior germplasm has been developed, both in national and international programs. In several countries this germplasm has reached the farmers, and starts making an impact on production. In other countries the promotion of new technology has met obstacles, and future challenges include: on-farm testing, seed increase and communication among research and extension scientists. The meeting concluded that this workshop, in addition to monitoring tours, regional meetings, etc. are effective instruments to exchange methodologies not only useful for the improvement of germplasm but also for promotion of new technology. The workshop provided information to the participants on the availability of the range of network nurseries while it was felt that some specific nurseries still needed to be formed. Such information provided the national program ways to select those nurseries of specific interest to them. It was clear that the prime interest for several countries had shifted from IBYAN nurseries to other nurseries which contain more genetic variability such as the Adaptation Nursery. Replicated yield trials with large number of entries, like the EP, were also felt as a need. Training was found to be one of the most important network building activities. With increasing maturity in staffing of many national programs, training should be diversified to serve different audiences separately; those newly appointed to work in the network; more basic information for those long active in the network; and in-country training involving both research and extension to promote new technology. Incorporation of scientific background information in the programs of an applied workshop such as this was felt highly useful.
