The established relationships (by statistical correlations) between total forms of some heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn), on one hand, and clay fraction and its mineralogical components, on the other hand, indicated that 2:1 clay minerals (especially smectite) are the main potential source of heavy metals at the colloidal level of 7 profiles of vertisol from the West Plain. The reduced role, from this point of view, of the 1:1 minerals (kaolinite) is determined, on one hand, by the trend of most of the heavy metals to be associated to 2:1 lattices and, on the other hand, to the fact that there is a small content of this mineral in these soils. The obtained results showed clearly that the role of colloidal fraction as potential source is determined not only by the clay quantity but also by the clay quality (mineralogical composition).
