A preliminary invertigation on the effects of vitamin C on performance of ready to lay pullets [Sudan]

This study was conducted to evaluate the physiological and productive responses of ready to lay pullets to ascorbic acid (AA) supplementation through three different means; feed, water or both. Sixty (Bovan) pullets were used in the study. The pullets were divided into three groups of similar body weight each represents a block. Four experimental treatments (A, B, C and D) were prepared for the study. The four experimental treatments were then allotted randomly among the blocks. The control birds received treatment A that consist of the basal diet and water both of which free from AA; birds received treatment B were given the basal diet contain 1000 mg AA/kg diet and water free AA; birds received treatments C were given the basal diet contain 500 mg AA/kg diet as well as water contain 500 p.p.m.AA. whereas birds received treatment D were given water contain 1000 p.p.m.AA and the basal diet free from AA. Farameters investigated were body temperature, body weight, feed conversion ratio and total leucocyte cont. Results showed that AA supplementation had significant (P0.05) positive influence on body temperature, body weight as well as total leucocyte count and it had significant (P0.05) negative influence on feed conversion ratio. Best results were obtained upon supplementation of AA through feed, therefore the anthor recommend that AA can be supplemented through feed under conditions of heat stress.
