Relation between cob weight and damage to maize caused by the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.)

From 1983-1995 cob weight and the number of plants infested by the European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn., were observed in south-western part of the Slovak Republic. Four maize hybrids were involved. Correlation coefficients between average weight of cobs in grams and percentage of plants damaged by the European corn borer showed that during the years with higher maize yield there was also usually higher damage caused by the European corn borer. The correlation between damage and yield was moderately strong
