Two groups of cultivars (A, B) of red clover (Trifolium pratense) were evaluated in row trials and in wide spacing experiments. The experiments with group A (19 cultivars) were established in rows on 3 sites over two years and in six wide-spacing experiments over one year. Group B (25 cultivars) included trials in rows at two localities and in a wide spacing experiment at one site. These series of field experiments were used for the verification of the multiple regression method for the estimation of the weight of different traits observed for determination of the green matter yield per plot using the traits observed on individually cultivated plants, too. The method made it possible to find 5 traits from 13 measured, which contributed significantly to the genotypic variation between the yields of cultivars. These traits should be used for "prebreeding" evaluation of genetic resources of forage crops, evaluated in rows and wide-spacing experiments. In comparison with the simple correlation it was possible to increase significantly the degree of determination R sup(2)of the green matter yield in the rows
