Status number for measuring genetic diversity

To monitor and predict genetic diversity, measures are urgently needed. It is argued that half the inverse of the average co-ancestry in the breeding population is a suitable measure for describing the diversity status of a pedigreed population. We will call that the status (effective) number. The concept of status number and its characteristics are discussed in relation to other measures. It will be equal to the census number for unrelated non-inbred individuals. It can never be bigger than the census number and never smaller than 0.5. An algorithm to calculate status number for real materials is presented. Breeding populations were monitored for status number over 10 generations using predicative formulas and Monte Carlo simulations
