Beta-D-glucopyranose-1-0-trans-cinnamate: a new constituent from foliage of Salix fragilis

The chemical Beta-D-glucopyranose-1-0-trans-cinnamate was isolated from foliage of Salix fragilis trees growing along the tributaries of the river Rhine. This compound was not found in trees growing further east of the central range of the species distribution. It is argued that the new compound may characterise a distinct chemical race of S. fragilis growing at its western border of distribution which may be further differentiated by a wound-induced response
