The effects of fermented broiler poultry litter on the ruminal environment in bulls

The effects of fermented broiler poultry litter on the ruminal biochemistry of bulls were studied for 18 weeks. Twelve Slovakian cross-bred black-white bulls were divided into two groups and fed rations (on a dry matter basis) containing 0% and 16.8-18.0% fermented broiler poultry litter. The actual acidity (pH), the total acidity (TA), NH3N, volatile fatty acids (acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid), the acetate/propionic acid ratio, the lactic acid and infusoria count were determined. A decrease in the pH (6.5) (P0.001), an increase in total acidity (21.9 titr. unit) (P0.01), lactic acid (2.0 mmol/l), NH3N (15.2 mmol/l) (P0.001) and the sum of volatile fatty acids (123.0 mmol/l) (P0.01), a tendency to a slight decrease in acetic acid (66.7 mmol/l) and a slight increase in propionic acid (28.8 mmol/l) were observed on day 17 in the experimental bulls. However, all these changes were within the normal physiological range. This indicates that there is no strong need for the rumen adaptation to fermented broiler poultry litter. Consequently, the feeding of fermented broiler poulty litter did not lead to adverse effects on ruminal digestion and from this point of view it can be used at no risk as a source of non-protein nitrogen
