Golgi-cox study of the foetal ependymal cells in small ruminants

The external morphology of ependymal cells in sheep and goat foetuses and 2-month-old lambs was studied using a Golgi-Cox impregnation. In the material studied, a great variation in the shape of the cellular body, the length of proximal and basal processes and in both the density and length of their lamellar projections were found. This variation was connected with the migration of foetal ependymal cells towards the ependymal lining and their gradual maturation. During the whole foetal period in the region of the 3rd cerebral ventricle (after preparatory staining with haematoxylin-eosin), many ependymal cells were mitotically active. Some traces from the foetal period can also be observed two months after the birth. No substantial differences in the external morphology of the foetal ependymal cells in sheep and goat were found
