Effects of cutting frequency on production and quality of semi-natural grassland

Effects of 3- and 5-cut systems with 3 cutting dates were studied in semi-natural grassland (Festuca-Cynosuretum) on Calcic Cambisol at Dolny Kubin (Slovakia). With 3 fertilizer treatments, there were 9 types of herbage regrowth dynamics in both systems. Over 14 years (1981-1994) dry matter yield and content of botanical groups was studied. The changing cutting dates influenced significantly all the studied parameters, but their effects on variability of yield were less marked than those of fertilizer treatments and other factors. Changes in herbage production and in its botanical and chemical composition indicate a diverse response of the sward at each cutting
