Study on Vibrio species and oxolinic acid residues from Penaeus monodon Fabricius in intensive culture ponds

Seventy four halophilic vibrios were isolated and identified from the hepatopancreas of moribund shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) obtained from various farms in Thailand. The study gives the first reported identification of vibrio damsela from shrimp. V. parahaemolyticus was the most frequently isolated bacteria, followed by v. vulnificus, V. harveyi, V. fluvialis, V. damsela and V. alginolyticus respectively. In addition, there were 7 strains of inidentifed Vibrio species. The sensitivity of oxolinic acid (OXA) was investigated against 74 strains of Vibrio bacteria isolated from shrimp. In vitro, the MICs values of almost all vibrios strains tested was range 0.025-0.25 ppm., with V. vulnificus showing higher MICs values than the others. Residue of OXA was studied in shrimp under farm conditions after oral administration with OXA 2.5 gm/kg feed for 7 days. The result demonstrated that OXA persisted in hepatopancreas and muscle of shrimp fed with pellet mixed on farm with OXA for 14 and 10 days respectively ; and for 22 and 18 days respectively in shrimp fed with factory - produced medicated feed. Sensitivity of this experiment for detection of OXA residues in shrimp tissue was limited at concentration 0.1 ppm.
