Effects of lactation feed intake on subsequent embryo survival rate of sows

Two levels of feeding during lactation were used to determine whether lactation feed intake would affect subsequent reproductive performance in the sows. During a 28-d lactation, 30 multiparous sows were given either 3 or 6 kg per day of feed containing 14.2 MJ DE/Kg and 19.4 percent CP. The results showed that between the two groups sows on low treatment lost more backfat during lactation. Although lactation feed intake did not significantly affect the weaning to remating interval and proportion of sows that were pregnant at Day 25 postweaning, the proportion of sows showing oestrus by 8 days postweaning were greater in the high-fed group. With the exception of space between embryos no parameter of reproductive performance measured at slaughter (i.e.ovulation rate, ovarian weight, uterine length, number of viable embryos, embryo survival rate and embryo crownrump length) was significantly affected by lactation feed intake. Progesterone change pattern and concentrations during early pregnancy were also not significantly influenced by levels of feeding
