Comparative study on the utilization of coconut meal and leucaena leaf meal as a protein supplement for common silver barb (Puntius gonionotus, Bleeker) in the pond

Objectives of this study are to determine the utilization of coconut meal (CM) and leucaena leaf meal (LM). Soybean meal and fish meal were utilized as a control diets (CD). The initial body length and body weight were 3.6 cm and 1.2 gm, respestively. Each treatment was contained crude protein approximataly 17.5 %. The earth pond area was 0.4 rai and was 70 cm depth. Total initial experimental fish number was 1,700 heads/treatment. The experimental period was conducted for 90 days. One hundred and twenty fishes were sampled from total fishes in order to be weighting measurement every 5 days. Average body weight of fish fed on LM tended to be large than those with CM and CD diets. Higher survival rate of fish was observed with CM as compared with LM and CD diets. Feed conversion rate and feed cost/weight gain of fish with CM tended to be better than those weight LM and CD diets. The resuls point out that coconut meal and leucaena leaf meal can be efficiently utilized as protein supplements for common silver barb in soybean meal and fish meal ration.
