Sustainable agriculture at R.I.T. Nakorn Sri Thammarat Campus: Present setuation and future possibilites

Various data from crop production records, land-use surveys and management practice investigation are used to analyse existing management systems. Resource-flow diagrams accompany text dicussion. Data relating to students background, learning experience and future occupation are used to identify additional problems. Examples of appropriate SAS are cited from the literature survey in the general discussion, and steps for promoting SAS are outlined. The investigation shows that features of SAS are already incorporated into production systems at NSC. However, several problems currently hinder further development. A consequence of the rigid sub-division of the management structure into three principle departments (Plant Science; Animal Science; Fisheries Science) is that levels of plant-animal-fish integration and resource management are low. Each department tends to work independently to generate departmental profit, rather than working in partnership with other departments for maximum NSC profit. In addition, few of the 755 students gain practical hands-on training for crop systems other than those for which their department is responsible. The campus layout is very favourable for varied SAS demonstration. Prerequisites for changes in management practices are higher levels of inter-departmental understanding and co-operation (instead of competition). Incentives need to be provided to encourage change. Probable benefits of SAS development are: two-fold increase in overall NSC profit; environmental stabiltity and broadly based education for students. Extending SAS to and from surrounding areas should promote coresponding regional benefits
