Application of Se-fertilizers in cultivated mint [Mentha piperita] and camomile [Chamomilla recutita] production in order to improve their pharmacological properties

Field experiments were conducted at the Institute for Medicinal Plants Research "Dr. Josif Pancic" in Pancevo (Yugoslavia) with the three rates of selenium (Se): 50, 500 and 1000 g/ha. Selenium was applied as the solution (Na2SeO4) by spraying soil surface prior to planting. The great influence of applied Se-fertilizers on the Se-accumulation in mint and camomile flowers and leaves was detected in all treatments. The highest selenium content of 0.17-31.1 ppm and 0.53-43.3 ppm was determined in mind leaves and camomile flowers of the first cut, respectively. Water and ethanolic extracts were also observed. Certain amounts of selenium (Se) were found in extracts, greatly influencing their pharmacological properties.
