Biological and biochemical characteristics of garlic ecotypes

Garlic ecotypes collected in traditional Yugoslav garlic-growing regions have been analysed for most important agronomic and biochemical characteristics. Significant differences have been found in the bulb mass (larger in the winter types than in spring types) and average mass of cloves (41 larger in the winter types). Dry matter content ranged from 34.2 to 39.9 in the winter types, from 34.1 to 47.8 in the spring types. The content of vitamin C was 15-17 mg in the winter types and about 6 mg in the spring types. The contents of mineral elements (Fe, Cu, Mg and Co) were mutually different but similar in the studied winter and spring garlic ecotypes. The agronomic and biochemmical characteristics depend on ecological conditions, i.e., climatic and soil conditions of the region of growing.
