Five clones of Eastern cottonwood (S1-20, S1-8, 450, 55/65 and 618) and Euramerican black poplar clone I-214 were investigated in the experimental station established on alluvial soil in middle Danube Basin (Yugoslavia). At the age of nine years, the best results were achieved by clones S1-8 and S1-20, as well as by clone I-214. Clones 618 and 55/65 had the worst results. At the end of the fifteenth year of plantation, clone I-214 had the greatest woos volume. A somewhat lower wood volume was achieved by the clones 450 and S1-8, while the lowest wood volume were those of the clones 618 and 55/65. It was assessed that low resistance of the clones 618 and 55/65 to leaf diseases caused by the genus Melamspora and bark cambium disease Dothichiza populea is the main reason of poore develooment of these clones. The results point to the intensive development of the clones S1-8 and S1-20 in the juvenile phase of development, and the marked development of the clone I-214 in the adult phase of its development.
