The effect of heavy metals (Ni, Cd, Pb and Mo) on the nitrate metabolism in young pea plants was investigated. The heavy metals were applied in 10E-7, 10E-5 and 10E-3 M concentrations. With the increase of heavy metal concentration in the nutrient medium, nitrate content significantly decreased in the above-ground parts but only slightly in roots. The correlation between the activity of the enzymes of nitrogen metabolism, nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase, and metal concentration was negative. Cd induced the highest and Mo the lowest decrease of the enzyme activity. The tested heavy metals had the lowest effect on the RUBISCO level, while the content of soluble proteins was significantly decrased only at 10E-3 M concentration. The results suggest that in pea plants, the tested heavy metals effected not only the taking up of nitrate but its metabolism as well.
