Amphetamine-induced rotational behaviour and immune response in the rat

Male Wister rats were intraperitoneally injected with dl-amphetamine sulfate (5 mg/kg b.w.) and tested for rotational behaviour in cyclindrical Plexiglass rotometer. Rats assigned as left-, right- and non-rotators were immunized with bovine serum albumin in compolete Freund's adjuvant and skin tested 14 and 21 days later with bovine serum albumin for Arthus and delayed hypersensitivity reactions. Anti-bovine serum albumin antibody level was determined by ELISA method. Arthus reaction was increased in left-rotators on day 14, but not on day 21, compared to right- and non-rotator rats. Delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions were similar in all groups on both days. ELISA level of anti-bovine serum albumin antibody in right-rotators was significantly lower in comparison with other groups on both days. These results suggest that there ia a connection between functional brain asymmetry and immune responsiveness.
