Agroecological, technological and organizational conditions of forage production in Yugoslavia

The investigation were conducted in three different areas in Yugoslavia. In lowlands (150 m), the greatest importance have lucerne for hay and maize for silage, but also many in-between crops contribute to the quality nutrition during the whole year. On plough-fields in lowlands 8,700 kg milk could be obtained, where only 3-20 energy is supplied by concentrates. For one dairy cow 0.52 h is necessary, out of which quantity 2/3 h is the main, and 1/3 h under in-between crops. In hilly region (670 m) forage is produced mainly on plough-fields and sown lawns. The main source for forage are sown lawns, primarily for hay and maize for silage. By their combination with winter and spring mixtures of legumes and cereals, the needs of dairy cow of 4,500 kg could be met with 0.57 h, that is, from the hectar of engaged surface about 7,900 of milk could be obtained. The lawns, natural and sown lawns, are practically the only source for forage in mountainous regions (1000 and 1200 m). Sown lawn provides energy percentage of meal with 73-86 and 1 h meets the needs of one milking animal, that is each hectar produces 4,500 kg milk.
