Performances of Novi Sad [Yugoslav] spring malting barley varieties

Agronomic characteristics of spring malting barley under the agroecological conditions of the Vojvodina Province (Yugoslavia) improved after the introduction of high yielding foreign varieties resistant to lodging and diseases. The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (Yugoslavia), developed 18 spring malting barley varieties by hybridizing divergent genotypes. Among the varieties released during the 80's, the best agronomic and technological characteristics were those of Novosadski 294 and Novosadski 301. The varieties Vihor, Jelen, Pek, Viktor and Milan, released in the 90's, have higher yields than Novosadski 294 by about 1 t/ha, as well as better cytolytic, proteolytic and amilolytic malt modification. Novi Sad malting barley varieties have good agronomic and technological charactertistics - their protein content is about 12 and malt extract about 78-80.
