Effects of species, fertilizer and planting dates on forage and seed yield of vetch

Three species of vetch (vicia dasycarpa, V. villosa and v. atropurpurea) were evaluated using four rates of fertilizer (0/0, 0.2, 0/40, and 18/20 N/P kg/ha) and six sowing dates starting from late March in an interval of two weeks to asses their responses interms of forage and seed yield. A split-split plot design with three replications was used. V. villosa and V. dasycarpa were the best forage and seed yielders, respectively. However, considering its high forage yield, producing reasonable quantities of seeds, regrowth ability and some degree of frost tolerance, V. villosa is the most suitable species for use. Application of P significantly improved the forage yield; seed yield, however, was not affected by fertilizer. If moisture is sufficient, May planting is advisable for forage production.
