The effect of planting date on the yield of chickpea, (Mariya variety) in northwestern Ethiopia

North western Ethiopia accounts 42 of the total annual production of chickpea in the country. However, productivity is low (500-1440 kg/ha) under farmers management. Planting date experiment consisting of six plating dates spaced at 15 days interval from 15 August to 30 October was conducted in RCB design of vertisols of Adet. Woreta and Bichena from 1993 to 1995 so as to determine the optimum planting date for Chickpea. Significant grain yield difference was observed due to planting dates at Adet and Woreta in 1994 and 1995. In 1993 grain yield was not recorded, however, vegetative performance of chickpea was looking good in all the locations from plantings of 15th and 30th September. The two year result indicated that the highest mean grain yield (1429 & 935 kg/ha) at Adet and 1502 and 1090 kg/ha at Woreta were obtained from plantings of 30th and 15th September, respectively. The reduction in yield at a result of early and late planting was due to excess and stress of moisture, respectively. Yield advantge of 1008 kg at Adet and 1024 kg at Woreta were obtained over early (30th October) planting was obtained at Adet but complete crop failure on late planting at Woreta. Hence the optimum planting dates raged from mid to late September.
