Edaphology and agroforestry potentials of the degraded sal (Shorea robusta) forest in Bangladesh

The sal (Shorea robusta) forest constitutes one of the major forest types of Bangladesh. Indiscriminate exploitation, inadequate management coupled with anthropic interferences have exhausted the resources of the sal forest to a level of degradation. The situation calls for a serious attention to devise technology and management for the proper use of this degraded land to ensure a proper land use planning for augmenting production and sustainability. The present paper discusses the edaphio relationships of the degraded sal forest spread over the pleistocence terrace soils. The land use history been highlighted. The agroforestry potentials of this landform have also been discussed. The paper concluded with some general recommendations to help proper land use planning and management for this degraded forest.
