Near InfraRed (NIR) is an environmental friendly alternative for the present-day classical method used for the determination of the sugar content at the reception of the sugar beets in the Tienen sugar refinery. The past 3 working seasons extensive tests were carried out in the beet receptions of all the factories of the group. At this occasion the possibility was examined to replace the classical POL measurement, after clarifying with lead acetate, by NIR measurement. The results are described in this article. From the moment a solid overall workable calibration curve is established - and this is labour-intensive and demands a lot of time - NIR is an environment friendly alternative, quick and simple.
