Social and scientific significance of urban flora is described together with the main geological, geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of the Brussels Capital Region. The study aims and methodology are presented. The Flora of the Brussels Region is characterized by its variety. A number of species have disappeared or are threatened. Exotic plants are being introduced and naturalized. Large sites are floristically very rich and count number of neophytes. The half-natural sites are stable and conserve a lot of indigenous species.
