Diet and blood pressure in adults - the paradigm shift

Dietary recommendations for the management of hypertension have traditionally focused on restriction of salt intake. Current evidence, however, has indicated that the influence of salt on blood pressure may be limited to only a subset of individuals in a population and, furthermore, that it is not an excess of one electrolyte, but rather inadequate levels of several, that produce blood pressure elevations. Diets high in fruit, vegetable, and dairy product content - and thus potassium, magnesium, and calcium - have now been documented to reduce blood pressure dramatically, regardless of salt intake levels. The emphasis of dietary recommendations for treatment or prevention of hypertension should be on improvements in overall dietary patterns rather than any single nutrient.
