The aurochs (Bos primigenius) died out in Poland in the early 17th century. A programme of "inverse" genetic selection was undertaken by the Heck brothers (Germany) in the 1930s to "re-constitute" a bovine having the external appearance of the European domestic cattle's lost ancestor. An original project combining tourism, nature and tradition ("T.N.T.") is currently being developed to install the so-called "reconstituted" aurochs in the Northern part of the country, namely the Mazury area. This is a forest and lake region highly moulded by the last glaciation and little affected by human settlements which took place relatively recently. After briefly surveying the historical background of the aurochs disappearance from 17th century Poland and contemporary attempts at its "reconstitution", the authors present the "T.N.T." associative project, emphasizing its main goals: developing a policy of green tourism and protecting nature, while reviving the ethnographic heritage of the Mazury region.
