Modelling dynamics of nitrifying trickling filters and ammonium meters

Due to increasing demands on nitrogen removal, several wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are currently being extended with nitrifying biofilm reactors. When improving the control, operation and design of such WWTPs, the dynamics of the biofilm reactors are important to consider. Generally, the dynamics of biofilm reactors can be divided into a slow mode caused by the growth and decay of the bacteria, and a fast mode caused by the reactor hydraulics, substrate transients in the biofilm and the response time of the bacteria to changes in conditions. This study focuses on the fast dynamics of nitrifying trickling filters (NTFs). A flexible model approach, based on division of the NTF into several continuously stirred biofilm reactors (CSBRs) in series, is used. An appropriate number of CSBRs and other model parameters are determined from trace substance pulse response experiments. Step response experiments carried out on a pilot scale NTF, equipped with continuous ammonium meters, show good agreement with model simulations. For the comparison, a dynamic model for ammonium meters of titration type was developed and experimentally verified.
